Carney’s Payton Davis – Oklahoma Army National Guard Spotlight
- Updated: January 12, 2020
Payton Davis is a senior at Carney High School and is a new member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He plays both fall and spring baseball and is also a member of the cheer team. Davis played football at Wellston High School before coming to Carney.
According to Davis he has felt the call to serve from an early age.
“No one in my family has served in the military and ever since I was a little kid I felt like I should start that tradition and I looked into all the branches and for me it was the best for helping pay for my education and to go on and get a teaching degree after I finish,” said Davis.
Davis is already reporting for duty one weekend a month and will continue to do so through college. After he graduates high school this spring, he’ll report to basic training at Fort Benning in Georgia.
Payton currently plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma to pursue a teaching degree, but after graduation he wants to be deployed overseas.
“Just because I understand all the freedom that we have isn’t free,” said Davis, “I’ve just always wanted to since I was young.”
Even though he’s still relatively new, Davis says he’s already enjoying the experience.
“I really like the comradery between all the other people there,” said Davis. “The first time I went it was just an instant bond and friendships that will last a long time and I keep in touch with a lot of those guys regularly now.”
