Stillwater’s Avery Lewis – Academic Athlete of the Month Presented by BancFirst Stillwater
- Updated: August 7, 2019
Avery Lewis is a cheerleader for the Stillwater Pioneers who excels in the classroom as well as in athletics. She works hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA while being enrolled in all of the Advanced Placement classes she can. While juggling both schedules can be tricky, Lewis does so successfully because her education is very important to her.
“It can be hard for me to find a good balance between sports and academics, but as long as I’m keeping up with my assignments and working hard, I seem to be fine,” she said. “Academics are one of my highest priorities. I really like to stay on top of things when it comes to getting my work done. I hope it’ll pay off later on down the road.”
Although math may be a least favorite subject for some students, Lewis says that she enjoys learning the subject for a couple of reasons.
“It honestly just comes more natural to me than the other subjects,” she said. “Although I don’t always enjoy the workload but I do like how there’s typically a black or white answer.”
Her cheer coach, Carolyn Walstad, regards Lewis as an “amazing student, brilliant, and a true joy.” While Lewis does love cheerleading for her high school and acknowledges the value of athletics, she knows that her hard work in the classroom will soon pay off as she builds a foundation for her future.
“Although athletics can teach a person a lot about discipline and how far they can push themselves, when it comes down to it, academics build the foundation for jobs and life skills that will be important later on,” said Lewis.
After she graduates from Stillwater High, Lewis says she would like to major in psychology, go to medical school, and eventually become a psychiatrist.
