A freshman track athlete at Newkirk High School, Alexia Smith has already made her mark as she recently placed third in the 3A State Track Meet for the long jump.
Smith plays basketball and is a member of the State Champion co-ed cheer team at Newkirk as well. She began competing in track six years ago, basketball five years ago and recently began cheer in the past year.
Smith said that she loves competing in her sports because of the encouraging community that surrounds her and the other athletes at her school.
“What I like most about my high school and my community is that if anything goes wrong or you need help, everybody knows everybody so you will always have help and support from friends or neighbors,” Smith said.
She also enjoys being an inspiration and leader for her teammates to reciprocate the help and support she’s received.
“One of the things that motivates me to do better is I want to succeed so that my teammates feel that they can do the same,” Smith said.
After she finishes high school in the coming years Smith hopes to attend Wichita State to pursue a future as a police officer or flight attendant.
