Newkirk’s LeeAnn Cooper currently competes in basketball and track and field as a thrower for the Tigers.

Cooper began participating in track and field in sixth grade as she was playing basketball, the only sport offered, until a new coach started the track program at the school. She decided to join the team and has loved the sport ever since. Cooper said she loves competing in throwing for the Tigers because of the feeling it gives her.

“I love the feeling of throwing and knowing you threw the best and just having to listen to them read out everyone’s distances,” Cooper said. “I just love the thrill of waiting to see if your throw was the best.”

Cooper also says that her love of throwing stems from the relationships and family she has with her teammates, as they are her top supporters and encouragers in her sport.

“I have always loved my teammates as we support each other through thick and thin and by the middle of the season we are all best friends and do pretty much everything together,” Cooper said.

In return, Cooper tries to be as great of a leader as she can to her teammates. She is the only senior in both basketball and track this year and tries to set a good example for the underclassmen. She knows they look up to her and she attempts to lead both verbally and by example.

She is also a strong student as she has carried a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and is graduating with honors and as her school valedictorian. She is also a member of Newkirk’s chapter of the National Honor Society and Bleacher Creatures- a fan participation club that cheers at school athletic events.

After high school, Cooper plans on attending the University of Central Oklahoma to pursue a degree in human services.
